The “VinMec International Hospital” in Hanoi was officially opened on Saturday the 7th of January. This 500-bed hospital covering 80,000 m² is the first project achieved by VK in Vietnam. The hospital was built in a spectacularly short period of just 13 months, of which 3 months for the design and 10 months for the build itself.

Scientists and surgeons from France, Germany, United Kingdom and Switzerland have developed a "virtual liver", using EU research funding, which will help surgeons better plan and carry out tumour operations and ensure quicker patient recovery. The PASSPORT project (Patient-Specific Simulation and Pre-Operative Realistic Training) makes a uniquely accurate "virtual liver" available to physicians based on medical images sent by the radiologist to a PASSPORT online service, which helps surgeons decide whether they should operate or not . In a new study from the Economist Intelligence Unit on healthcare provision for an ageing population, supported by Pfizer, the overwhelming majority of health professionals surveyed (80%) express their concern about how they will be treated when they grow old. They are indeed sceptical that current policies to address demographic shift caused by an ageing population are comprehensive, realistic or sufficiently funded to address future demand. The outlook is not entirely pessimistic, however: while 49% of survey respondents claim that ageing is a threat to the viability of their countries...

A year on from a Ministerial review that confirmed the importance of Summary Care Records in supporting urgent and emergency care, patient groups are advocating its use to improve care for the millions of people with long term conditions they represent.
The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign recently recommended that their patients consider adding important information about their conditions to their Summary Care Record to improve their experience of hospital care. Mencap, Asthma UK, Diabetes UK and the British Lung Foundation are also now looking to raise awareness among their members...
